Bloom

I made this next project during my senior year ceramics class in high school. It was one of the first major projects we did on the pottery wheels. This was a new skill for me but definitely fun to learn and I became a big fan by the end of this project. For this assignment we had to make two identical pieces using the wheel and it had to have a function. I chose to make two chips and salsa bowls. To do this I had to spin four separate pieces and then attach them, which took a bit longer but was well worth it. I had to spin each piece wider and bigger than it was actually going to be so then I could cut into it and created my desired shape. Once I carved out all the pedals on each set, I tried to bend them outwards to make more of a flowery, blooming shape. I then attached the smaller bowls to its larger counterpart. The bowls were fired in the kiln and I was able to start glazing. I had some reference pictures I was using to help me with this project and the ones I liked the most had this pinkish, red color to them so I chose that for my design. I made the pink fade out near the center of the bowls just to give it more depth and not just have a flat color. If I was go to back and edit this piece I would have pushed the pink a little more and gone lighter with the white. I think that would still have created the look I was going for, but would’ve made it more even and flower-like. I do love the finished product however. I think I was pretty successful with making the bowls as identical as possible, as per the projects requirements, and it is fully functional! I have used it on several occasions to hold chips and salsa, guac, etc. It definitely was a fun and useful project that I really enjoyed doing.
